~ suki's corner - good reads~

Saturday, January 26, 2013
Besides playing video games and shopping I also love to read in my spare time (when I have any haha) I usually go through these phases where I'll buy a handful of books and practically won't sleep until I've finished all of them. So I decided that it'd be a great idea to share some of the books I've read and enjoyed! Like with everything else, I'm really picky with what I read but personally think everyone is hahaha I think most of these books are available on amazon so hopefully you can get your hands on them easily.

Actually one of my friends was surprised when I told her reading is a hobby of mine and I enjoy it very much. She said  that I seemed to be the type that would only read magazines or stuff related to celebrities (make up books etc.) -.- Which is ironic because it couldn't be far from the truth not that there's anything wrong with magazines. I used to read them in high school but stopped once I realized they repeat themselves tediously and I didn't have the funds to just throw away like that. I'm also very bad at remembering the names of the authors but I'll remember the name of the book. Yes this happens in class too, I remember the name of the piece and forget who made it =(

~ historical fiction ~
One of my favorite genres! I've enjoyed both books above. They were simple to read yet enjoyable. I'm not a fan of heavy reading and I feel that I do too much of it for school anyways =P Right now I really want to read Margret Atwood's The Penelopaid!

Guilty Pleasure. (I know these are geared for elementary schooled children lol) I love these Royal Diaries, I think I have about 5 or so but there are actually over a dozen I believe. I always buy them in hardcover in fact I don't even know if they are available in soft over but in the older ones they used to line the edges of the book in gold but they stopped that now, sad =(  Also because these are easy to read I'll usually try to and do read them in one night, what do you mean it's 4am?

~ fantasy and science fiction ~
The Hobbit. Enough said. I love it soooooo much and I'm also not one to baby my books very much as you can tell hahahaha I often bring this with me when I get my nails done =S I didn't take a photo of a science fiction book but I enjoy reading things about the future etc. I'm not really interested in elves, magicians or demons of any sort. The Hobbit is really the only exception and I only made it through book one of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I also read Harry Potter but I prefer the movies more.

Also has anyone read Alice in Wonderland before? I can't believe that's a childrens book. It's so trippy and wacked out I still have a hard time wrapping my head around it but I guess that's why I love reading it, it seems different every time!

~ others ~
I'm not sure what to categorize this one in but it's a-m-a-z-i-n-g! It was featured at the cashiers desk so I bought it last minute and I'm so happy I did! Taking a bit from wikipedia this books talks about the evolution of monogamy for humans as well as divorce and human mating systems. I admit, the first few chapters were somewhat of a grind because it talks a lot about theories and scientific stuff (note Darwin) but trust me, it's worth it!

However I also want to note that there is much debate going on about the truth and myths about this book. From the background of the authors to the actual research claimed so please read with a pinch of salt =) There is also a book called Sex at Dusk (on amazon) that apparently "rebuttles" this book and I'm really interested in reading that too!

Also the bookstore is currently pushing out all these books are "the self" and "our self independence", the books all look so good but gosh when I turn it over to see the price tag there will be a 5$+ difference from here and the states T_T It adds up when you buy a lot of books! I also want to buy the Secret!

The newest addition to my bookshelf! I've only read the first few pages but my gosh it's so good already! I can't wait to find time to really enjoy this book! I've always wanted to read one of those "guide to be a lady" book and I finally found one with a twist and humor!

Dunno why the page turned out this way again but I hope most of you can make out a bit of the page! I ordered the book off Modcloth, it was my first purchase with them and so far so good!

I usually like to read a book when I have lots of time to which basically means enough time for me to finish at least half the book because....I just can't put it down. I will neglect so much just to finish the darn book it's not even funny. One time I bought The Tiger Mother while grocery shopping and ignored the bf the entire night until I finished the book lol no he didn't get mad but I did feel a tad guilty =P (That is also one good book btw)

The box the book came in was adorable! Mushroom prints all around~

Have you ever read a book that was really good but just fell flat at the end? Or perhaps you read a book and realized after you finished it, that you didn't like it at all? I find this doesn't happen to me too often but when it does I usually feel somewhat disappointed or nothing at all, oddly enough. I just move on to the next book and hope it's better! I also like to browse for books online first, I find it more convenient than to go to the actual bookstore. I also like real books and don't know if I'll ever convert to an e-book reader though it is tempting because books are cheaper that way but but but....nothing beats flipping the pages, smelling the book and just....feeling it LOL

I hope everyone is having a good January and getting over the holiday blues (and bills lol) My month has been very nice so far but I know things are going to get hectic soon with all the exams and papers piling up!

~ catching up & cafe medina ~

Sunday, January 13, 2013
I had a bunch of these random photos sitting in my folder so I decided to post them one and for all! Especially since a lot of of you commented that you like my posts about "random" stuff lol Most of these were taken in December =)

Got a manicure, which is rare because I usually do my own nails but found a cheapie place and decided to go for it. I can't remember the base colour but I know the gold dots are from the permanent Sephora collection. While I really did enjoy this combination I didn't like the pearly effect of the base coat. And yes, the camera focused on the lens instead of my nails, but in the lcd screen it looks like it focused on my nails! Grr....

Finished this tube of body lotion! It smelled soooo nice (mmmmm coconut) and really moisturized my skin! Beware, it's not one of those fast drying lotions and a bit sticky so it's probably a good idea to apply it at night or when you don't need to wear pants =P I wear shorts at home.

I have a love hate relationship with this mascara. This is a very dry mascara but I find that I can put on a lot of layers very quickly instead of waiting for it to dry AND it holds my curl very well! Cons are that it flakes a bit and if you don't curl enough it will smudge! I'm not throwing it out yet and am trying to finish it, it doesn't flake all the time too, what a moody mascara.

Two elf products I was really disappointed with. The tm was so runny and smelled terrible while the concealer concealed nothing but I guess you can sorta maybe use it as a highlighter? Or some sort of brightener?

The super gorgeous pretty jewelry box my friend gave me for Christmas! Omg I love it! I always wanted one but never splurged to buy one, these are the best kinds of presents! It's so pretty I don't want to use it in case I ruin it, it's mostly made of cardboard and I'm so scared of putting a dent in it somewhere. (and I will probably will boo hoo)

Had a hard time taking this photo cause I didn't know where to aim the mirror at, there were no blank walls lol

I love how the pattern continues within and throughout the box too! I'm thinking of lining the insides with felt or fabric so the jewelry doesn't come into direct contact with the box.

A very disappointing tinted moisturizer. It was as sheer as regular moisturizer but smelled ten times worst. To note, I'm not particular to smells very much but I can't stand bad smells!

Another product I didn't like. Actually I was going to make a "didn't work out makeup" post with these items but I guess I got lazy and decided to insert them into this post hahahaha This lip tint stained my lips unevenly and the stain lasted very long, too long in fact =( I like my benefit stain much more!

o0o0o0o Saw these at T&T on sale and had to have it kekekeke I'll try to take pictures when I'm making them =3

My new facial wash. It smells a lot like Eccotique spa if anyone's been there. Really heavy lavender scent, not that I mind. This product doesn't contain sulphate to create lots of bubbles so it only produces a gentle lather. I do like it but I prefer my Yes to Tomatoes face wash more, it was able to take off my olive oil makeup remover in one go.

My mum bagged up some of our manga because it was taking too much space in my brothers room hahaha I think we still have the more frequently read ones out.

I was going to do a post on Cafe Medina but I guess I'll do a very short version here. As we all know I am terrible with taking photos of the actual cafe so I have no photo of that. The drink above was a lavender mocha and it tasted horrible. It sounded so nice but the lavender was too bitter and overpowering, it tasted like really raw lavender. I didn't taste any mocha =( I guess this drink was too strong for my taste buds.

I had the La Senta and when it came like this I got nervous. I'm not very good at putting my food together, in fact I'm not good at it at all! So I had some difficulty eating this but the ingredients did turn out very nicely. I slathered some olive oil covered avocado onto my biscuit then some egg and prosciutto. I didn't eat the tomatoes or use the vinegar and olive oil mixture (does anyone know what that is called?) The bf had a sandwich which wasn't bad. Perhaps I ordered the wrong item but I won't be coming back to Cafe Medina anytime soon.

My mum and I were super obsessed with these chocolate bars, I think we bought more than 20 within this Christmas season.

So far 2013 has started off stressful with sorting out my school schedule and perhaps planning a family trip for the spring. I usually enjoy trip planning but since I really need to focus on school I see it as a chore now, boo. Hopefully when the time gets closer I'll be able to enjoy it more!

~ cafe salade de fruits ~

Saturday, January 12, 2013
Cafe Salade de Fruits is a small french bistro located within a Cultural center, I believe it's the French Cultural center which made it a bit hard to find. The cafe is also fairly small and when I say small I mean small. It really echoed the small cafes in Paris where you are almost "blocked" into your corner, I didn't have too much of an issue with it but maybe avoid bringing large bags. From reading numerous reviews I expected the menu to be entirely in french but from what I remember there was English as well. It is cash only and the place fills up quick!

When you see this sign you'll know you've come to the right place!

They had adorable mini street signs of Paris decorating the tables! Love it! The inside decor was cute and loaded with various metal street signs.

Starting off our meal with some bread. It was alright and I was slightly disappointed since I thought we were going to get the amazing bread we got in Paris.

~ My main: Mussels and fries ~

Lots of the reviews raved about the mussels so I had to try it and it was delicious! I personally wouldn't eat fries with mussels and I read somewhere that you could possibly substitute the fries with a salad which I would have done if I'd known in the first place boo~  With that said, the fries were amazing!!!! Of course I put most of my attempt and stomach into the mussels so I didn't finish the fries but I did pack them for home. For the price the amount of mussels was overwhelming and this was only the regular size.

Overall I had a nice filling meal here and wouldn't mind coming back to try some other items on their menu. They have good prices and decent portions from what I saw on other people tables (creeper). Next time I want to try a "real" breakfast/brunch item~

~ iphone photos - december 2012 ~

Saturday, January 5, 2013
Wow it seemed like December was a really long month for me! Probably longest out of the year. I finish my finals and finally got a little break before working a lot again. On Christmas day I went to eat dim sum with a close friend and we ended up chatting away at Starbucks for 5 hrs, we only separated because we had family plans lol

My sister and I laughed so hard at this at 2am. Read it with a British accent.

These were super expensive for what they were.

Photography wasn't allowed. A girl decided to take a photo in the middle of the show and the usher actually went to where she was sitting (in the middle of a row) to tell her no photos. Over all the show was good but I was a little disappointed, I probably won't purposefully go to another show. I guess it was so hyped up I was expecting death defying stunts etc. I also think I prefer things like musicals more so I'm biased lol If you are planning to go don't bother purchasing the expensive tickets for a closer seat because the tent is fairly small.

At the beginning of the show one of the actors, dressed up as a lizard came out to say "hi". He also took popcorn from the audience and started to eat from it....actually he licked it and then gave it back to the girl. I kept wondering if she was ever reimbursed for her popcorn....

Noms! Minty chocolate! I always buy a lot of chocolate during this time of the year because of the pretty packaging.

That is one sinister and creepy looking duck drawn by my sister.

Chocolate advent calender from my mum! I actually never remember to eat it everyday so I get to pop out about 5 in one sitting to make up for the past days lol

Thigh high socks love!
Some nommy fish from The Flying Pig.

Love the Christmas decorations in the malls.

(I popped into gamestop the other day to buy harvest moon and she told me it was sold out, like wth, when did this game get this popular? And to think I used to I used to feel crazy to preorder it....)

Something I randomly saved off tumblr to show a friend and this definitely applies to me!

Candy cane truffle! Yummy!!!

hahahahahahahahaha this blog is becoming uncensored now lol

My cute megu, it evolved a few times during the month but I didn't take photos lol

I attempted to do something christmassy with pastel colours but my nails just turned out looking like Easter eggs =( It looks more like mint in real life but in photos it turned out robin blue.

Salted caramel cake pop, the states gets the best stuff!

Cute Christmas cupcakes I found at T&T.

What a cute tea pot. I know this restaurant, Shanghai River, is very popular for shanghainese food but the service was awful. They don't hire enough servers and the ones that are there aren't attentive enough. My family had crab and they never came to change the plates even once, we just left the plates full of crab shells on the table which was fairly small already. They only cleared out empty dishes when it came time to put down another dish because the table was already crowded with dishes! Then when I was paying the server stood RIGHT next to me as I was entering in my credit card info (and tip), my sister was shocked! What a bad experience and it was my sister and my christmas dinner to my parents too =(

I got to choose between these bunnies in Professor Layton ( the ds game) I finally chose the one on the left but the floppy ear one is so cute too! I also rarely use the 3D function as I find it gives me a headache and it's hard for me to keep it at the perfect level to achieve the 3D-ness.

Laughed my butt off at this image my friend sent me.

Found this at the gift shop when I was at the Vandusen gardens, so adorable and sorta regretting not buying it now....

Yummy spinach and cheese baked oyster!

A super gorgeous pretty rococo jewelry box my friend got me for christmas!

My not so cute megu =(

December was amazing but January is giving me a hard time! I hope it will get easier by the end =) I noticed I'm nearing 300 readers~ Yay! That also means a giveaway soon!
